Position Description
Provides support to the Ophthalmology Specialty Clinics by performing preliminary eye examinations and tests, and by assuring the steady and even flow of patients through the clinic. Work is performed within established guidelines. Works under direct supervision of Ophthalmologist when performing patient-care related duties. Works under only general supervision in all other duties. Employees in this classification normally have no delegated supervisory responsibility. Work is performed under normal clinic conditions, necessitating a high degree of contact with patients and with faculty and staff of department and occasional outside contacts.

Major/Essential Functions
* Maintains patient flow by reviewing daily clinic schedule to ensure that assigned clinic is not under or over-booked. * Responsible for ordering necessary supplies and equipment, and keeping an inventory of these for the assigned clinic. * Examines patient charts for that day's clinic. * Performs preliminary examinations of patients. This includes brief medical history and determining the purpose of the patient's visit. * Performs various ocular and vision tests, and dilates eyes of patients when necessary. * Teaches patients how to use and care for contact lenses. * May assist with minor eye surgery. * Performs biometry for IOL calculations. * Performs subjective refraction using phoropter. * Ensures cleanliness of examination rooms, and that rooms are stocked with necessary supplies and equipment. * Responsible for opening of assigned clinic in the morning, and closing at the end of the day. * Prepares clinic statistics for various reports. * May be responsible for preparing various monthly reports. * Performs other related duties as required.

Work Location

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years experience working in an ophthalmic or optometry setting
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate computer skills
  • Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye. 
  • Knowledge of basic eye care and hygienic methods and practices involving the treatment of the
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to manage interactions with
    difficult people.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
