Major/Essential Functions
Provides support to the Laboratory Safety Manager in the implementation of the chemical and biological safety programs for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center; including regional campuses. Surveys research and clinical laboratories for compliance with federal, state, local, and institutional laboratory safety rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines; conducts operational inspections of chemical fume hoods, safety showers, and eyewash stations; maintains data/records regarding laboratory surveys, equipment inspections, laboratory certification, and laboratory worker credentialing. Assists the Laboratory Safety Manager with the review of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) protocols and serves as an alternate member of both the IACUC and IBC. Performs complex safety and health program work. Work involves developing safety policies and procedures; participating in the safety training and education of staff; inspecting work areas and activities for hazards; and investigating accidents.
  • Maintain the computer databases for the TTUHSC Laboratory Safety Program.
  • Maintain the TTUHSC Chemical Inventory Program. Receives hazardous chemicals, updates inventories, and tracks the chemicals as needed.
  • Assists with, and creates reports for, laboratory inspection surveys and laboratory incident investigations.
  • Assist with the management of the TTUHSC Ethanol Distribution Program.
  • Assists with the review of IACUC and IBC protocols for chemical and biological safety concerns.
  • Assists in the development and presentation of chemical and biological safety training for TTUHSC.
  • Performs periodic inspection of safety showers, eyewashes, drench hoses, and fume hoods.
  • Assists in responding in HAZMAT incidents and assisting in decontamination.

Preferred Qualifications
Position Specific Qualifications:
Working knowledge of chemical compatibility and reactivity. Working knowledge of biological safety. BS/BA degree with a concentration in the physical and/or life sciences. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively. Familiar with computers, software, and data input. General knowledge of safety procedures as related to assigned tasks. Ability to analyze data and deduce trends and cause /effect relationships.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Decision-making and reasoning should be based on knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures as applicable to the laboratory work environment. Two years work experience in a chemical of biological laboratory. Experience with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules.

Required Qualifications
Proficiency in written and mathematical processes as may be reflected by completion of high school and two years of college level work in Occupation Health and Safety with course work in assigned area. Four years of job related experience. Additional job-related education may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis. Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local laws pertaining to occupational safety. General knowledge of safety procedures as related to assigned tasks. Ability to assist in the execution of a program of campus safety. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely.
