Position Description
Manages a section in a department that has institutional oversight. Plans, organizes and develops goals and procedures for the section. Represents the section to administrators, outside agencies and others on relevant matters. Supervises subordinate staff.

Major/Essential Functions
Conducts Laboratory safety surveys, audits, and inspections; Investigates laboratory incidents and hazards; Responsible for managing Chemical and Biological Inventory Program(s); Serves as institutional Biological Safety Officer (BSO); Responsible for conducting performance checks of Chemical Fume Hoods, Safety Showers, and Emergency Eye/Face Wash stations; Assists in response to HAZMAT incidents involving hazardous materials and assisting in decontamination; Reviews research protocols;
Responsible for development, presentation, and evaluation of laboratory safety training and safety programs (biological, chemical,
laboratory safety) and training programs for Shipping of Hazardous Materials/Dangerous Goods (HazMat) and maintains training
records of employee HazMat training; Recommends licensing of research laboratories; Approves laboratory worker credentialing; Maintains and updates Laboratory Safety Manual; Maintains the Laboratory Safety Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG) manual; Reviews current laws, rules, regulations, and guidelines relating to laboratory safety. Promulgates and incorporates relevant criterion into the Laboratory Safety Manual.

Preferred Qualifications
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. Computer literate and familiar with MS Office programs. Self starter with ability to plan and organize. Well grounded in safety and laboratory procedures. Dependable. Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, or other relevant Basic Science. Masters Degree preferred; five years broad-based experience involving work with hazardous materials in a research laboratory or safety environment. Speak and read English. Ability to apply knowledge and experience to perform requirements of position; ability to solve problems related to application of laboratory safety principles.

Desired credentials include: Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP); Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP); Certified Safety Professional (CSP); Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH); Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM); Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO); or other related certifications or licenses.

Occasional Duties
Must have and maintain valid State of Texas Driver License and be listed as an approved driver as determined by TTUS Office of Risk Management and insurance carrier. Must be able to pass the employee Criminal Background Check; Occasional travel to Abilene, Amarillo, Dallas, Midland, and Odessa campuses; Performs other duties as assigned by Director or other administrative
authorities.
