Position Description
Employees in this classification are responsible for providing professional nursing care in an assigned specialty or sub-specialty clinic. They perform a variety of general and specialized nursing duties as part of a total health care team to provide the patient with complete evaluations. Employees in this position generally assist the head nurse in the supervision of other clinic personnel and may substitute for this person in the event of his/her absence. May supervise and instruct subordinate nursing personnel. Receives supervision from head nurse or physician, functions independently within guidelines. May supervise ancillary nursing personnel in the performance of certain tasks, and assists in training personnel. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions and requires a high degree of contact with patients, families, and other clinic personnel and outside professionals.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Assists with consenting new patients to COG- work with doctor(s) to see which protocol best fits patient, verify protocol is open, print all consent forms for physician to have signed; distribute copies to patient's family, hospital and research notebook, print out road maps and treatment schematic and distribute to doctors, nurse, parents and hospital as appropriate.
  • Register new patients on COG website-after patient has been consented and meets eligibility criteria per treating physician.
  • Send specimens for Biology studies; follow proper procedures for sending specimens, send copies of necessary protocol documents to pathology and lab to expedite collection of specimens per protocol.
  • Review protocol availability: Open protocols (available to register patients), closed to accrual (no patients that need to be followed), completed (final data analysis is done), pending(protocol to be opened) and drafts.
  • Submit report to IRB (amendments, continuing reviews, adverse events, personnel changes, opening and closing protocols, study design assessment, temporary closures, patient/family letters, action letters, permanent study closure, safety reports, emergency memos for the sponsors, adverse event spreadsheets and IRB stipulations) as backup to lead coordinator, submit data and reports to COG as appropriate, submit reports to CTSU as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of pediatric oncology and/or COG rules and expectations.
  • Must be research certified through SOCRA or ACRP. If not currently certified, must obtain certification after two years of full-time employment as a research nurse.

Required Qualifications
Education:
Completion of a Board of Nursing accredited program of professional nursing or scheduled to complete a program of professional nursing within 120 days of applying for a position.
License/Certification:
Current Registered Nursing license in the state of Texas or the attainment of a temporary permit from the Board of Nursing to practice professional nursing pending full licensure in the state of Texas. New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX- RN) on the first attempt.
