Position Description
Employees in this classification provide support to the Ophthalmology Specialty Clinics by performing preliminary eye examinations and routine tests, and by assuring the steady and even flow of patients through the clinic. Work is performed within established guidelines. Works under direct supervision of ophthalmologist when performing patient-care related duties. Works under only general supervision in all other duties. Employees in this classification normally have no delegated supervisory responsibility.

Major/Essential Functions
* Maintains patient flow by reviewing daily clinic schedule to ensure that assigned clinic is not under or over-booked. * Responsible for ordering necessary supplies and equipment, and keeping an inventory of these for the assigned clinic. * Examines patient charts for that day's clinic. * Performs preliminary examinations of patients. This includes brief medical history and determining the purpose of the patient's visit. * Performs various ocular and vision tests, and dilates eyes of patients when necessary. * Teaches patients how to use and care for contact lenses. * May assist with minor eye surgery. * Ensures cleanliness of examination rooms, and that rooms are stocked with necessary supplies and equipment. * Responsible for opening of assigned clinic in the morning, and closing at the end of the day. * Prepares clinic statistics for various reports. * May be responsible for preparing various monthly reports.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of one year experience working in an ophthalmic or optometry setting
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate computer skills
  • Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye. 
  • Knowledge of basic eye care and hygienic methods and practices involving the treatment of the
    eye. 
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to manage interactions with
    difficult people.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Required Qualifications
+Education:+ A minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent. +License/Certification:+ * Current Ophthalmic Assistant certification. OR * Eligible for certification and complete certification within twelve months of hire. +Experience:+ At least one year of experience working in an ophthalmic or optometry setting. One year of work experience as an LVN may substitute.
