Position Description
Employees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory conducting specified phases of research projects. Performs work independently and responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory research projects. Performs work independently and responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standard procedures and techniques. Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards maybe present due to use of radioactive, carcinogenic or other potentially harmful substances. Responsibilities include ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and equipment, and for ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct or direct work of subordinate laboratory personnel.

Major/Essential Functions
-  Perform independent work in a research laboratory under the supervision of senior personnel
- Maintain work areas and equipment as instructed by senior laboratory personnel
- Designs, conducts, and analyzes experiments.  Maintains current lab notebook.  Prepares drafts for experimental section of manuscripts.  Prepares figures depicting results.  Presents and discusses results in weekly lab meetings.
- Supervises lab activity and general lab maintenance.
- Maintains, calibrates and troubleshoots any equipment in the lab, and performs general lab clean-up procedures.  Cleans and sterilizes laboratory glassware and instruments.  Instructs others to do the same.
- Manages and orders lab supplies.  Maintains and helps to manage lab inventories.
- Prepares basic solutions for use within the lab.

Required Qualifications
Master's degree in one of the sciences, or equivalent combination (6 years) of job-related experience and college education. Experience may be substituted for college education on a year for year basis. Work experience excludes volunteer work.
