|Employees in this classification are responsible for day-to-day maintenance of animals assigned and basic maintenance of animal room associated with the facility. Employees in this classification have no delegated supervisory responsibilities but may aid the supervisor in training new employees. Work consists of both direct and indirect contact with animals. Conditions may become stressful because of animal odors. Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases, animals exposed to toxic materials, radioactive materials, bites, lacerations, etc.. Conditions may become hazardous if animals become ill or are being treated with known toxic substances (i.e., carcinogens, microbial substances. etc). Weekend and holiday assignments on a rotational basis are expected.|
| Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the LARC washroom (including use of the cage washer, bottle washer, autoclaves, water bottles filler, cage racks, etc).|
Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all washroom equipment. Report any equipment issues to supervisor.
Clean/organize washroom, storage rooms, procedure rooms, animal rooms, and hallways as assigned/needed. Take out trash. Check mice and insect traps.
Maintain feed and bedding rooms as assigned. Rotate stock as needed to ensure oldest is used first and expired feed is discarded.
Prepare cages and water bottles for assigned rodent change-outs as scheduled (generally every two weeks for mice and every week for rats).
Conduct weekly or bi-weekly rodent cage change-outs as assigned. Conduct spot changes as needed.
Daily animal census counts and health checks as assigned. Accurately record animal counts on room log sheets. Report health concerns to supervisor or animal health technician.
Available for weekend and holiday duties as assigned, on a rotational basis. This includes animal feed and water checks, health checks, and environmental checks.
Operate vehicle to retrieve supplies and/or animals. Make sure vehicles are cleaned regularly.
|Completion of the 8th grade. No previous work experience. Ability to follow instructions.|
| Completion of high school or GED.|
Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
Some knowledge of animal husbandry preferred.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions required.
Ability to keep accurate records of cage and bottle washer temperatures, room environment and maintenance, and animal counts and health required.
Good written and oral communication skills preferred.
Basic computer and office equipment experience preferred (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Team oriented, but able to perform tasks individually with an emphasis on customer service.
Keen, detail-oriented observational skills.
