Position Description
Manages and directs the day to day operations of a research center/institute or medium sized department. Plans, coordinates and supervises the operation and activities of the center/institute/department. Develops and implements policies and procedures, administers the budget, organizes tasks and sets priorities.

Major/Essential Functions

Maintains Quality Assurance program by ensuring the Great Plains Lions Eye Bank’s compliance with standards set by the state of Texas, OSHA, and FDA.

Reviews donor records to determine if tissue is eligible for surgical use for tissue procurement, processing and placement according to Eye Bank policy and procedures.

Reviews and revises Eye Bank Policy & Procedure Manual, providing updated copies to the Medical Director for yearly review.

Maintains awareness of FDA regulations and guidelines. 

Recommends and implements policies and procedures to maintain or improve existing eye bank functions.

Oversees the completion and proper storage of donor records, recipient records, and protocol sheets.

Responsible for inspection teams visits to the Eye Bank.

Trains new technical staff and documenting their progress.

Performs surgical procedures to remove and prepare human corneal tissue for transplant and research. 

Coordinates the placement of approved tissue for transplants with surgeons.

Evaluates the processed cornea to determine suitability of tissue for human transplant.

Coordinates referrals from other agencies and the call center for potential donors.

Approaches families regarding the option of donation of corneal tissue for transplantation, research and education


Completes EBAA and State reports as necessary.

This position will require working days, nights, weekends, holidays and on-call hours.

Five years of related Eye Bank experience. 
Knowledge of medical terminology.

Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in devising, installing and interpreting rules, regulations, policies or 


Ability to supervise staff of professional, technical and clerical subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to express ideas and information, clearly, concisely, verbally and writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with subordinates, superiors, and officials of other

Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT).

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required, master's preferred; Six years progressively responsible management experience. Additional education beyond Bachelor's may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
